(S.E.A.T.)

Serenity Equine Assisted Therapy is where your journey to healing begins! Whether you want to overcome shyness, gain confidence and poise or if there are more in-depth challenges you or a loved one are facing, we can help!

Equine-assisted therapies have been a quietly developing area of effective therapy for many years. Clients with challenges such as anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, trauma, PTSD, those on the Autism Spectrum, and many others are helped by taking part in this interesting and fun way to combine therapy with the love of horses.

The activities may range from simply being in the horse’s presence to asking the client to navigate the horse under instruction. It really depends upon the client’s needs and goals.  I give the client the opportunity to verbally process what happened during our session. Some clients want to talk about it, others do not. Nonetheless, most of my clients report that they develop a new sense of self-awareness from working with horses that is transferable to other areas of their lives.

How is it possible for horses to be such effective therapeutic facilitators?

As prey animals, horses are very intuitive creatures and possess an acute sense of awareness to everything that is going on in their environment. They are extremely sensitive to the actions of humans and have the extraordinary ability to perceive our non-verbal behavior. Horses are completely honest in the way they react to situations. They do not have the ability to lie or gauge their reactions to spare anyone’s feelings. Therefore, I find horses to be a fantastic instrument to use when getting a “read” on what is going on with a client. I find them particularly useful with clients who are unable or unwilling to verbally communicate their thoughts and/or feelings.

If the client wants to learn to ride, the next steps are learning how to mount the horse, sit properly, hold the reins, and voice commands. We have found that sitting on a horse and walking while talking with our therapist is also an effective means to initiate change.

There are no waiting rooms, sterile offices, or uncomfortable chairs here - just a serene, natural environment to relax and move forward in your journey.
